Phoenix Mesa-Gateway Airport growing its economic impact

Phoenix-Mesa_Gateway_Airport 2013Phoenix Mesa-Gateway Airport has a $1.3 billion economic impact and accounts for more than 2,000 direct jobs.

That is according to a new study by Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business.

ASU economist Lee McPheters authored the report which found 60 percent of the Mesa airport’s 1.4 million annual passengers are tourists.

“Visitor spending from travelers arriving at Gateway Airport is up by more than 433 percent from just three years ago. These air visitors alone spent $394 million last year, and that created more than 4,000 jobs,” said Mesa Mayor Scott Smith.

The airport is owned by a number of East Valley cities, city of Phoenix and Gila River Indian Community.

The airport is the former Williams Gateway Airport. It has sought to grab passenger service in recent years. Allegient Air has flights between Mesa and San Francisco, Las Vegas, Bellingham, Wash., Appleton, Wis., Wichita, Kan. and a number of other cities.

The ASU study found the airport supports a total of 10,470 jobs across the Valley.
